New Trend: “Adolescent Skin Care”

With the decrease in the age of social media usage, the application age of skincare trends has also dropped. Alongside this, we have encountered a new concept: "tween skincare routine." We see many posts and recommendations under this concept, covering the skincare of children aged 12-18.

As a dermatologist, I believe that the skincare routine applied in this age range should be as simple as possible. Unless there is a specific recommendation from a healthcare professional, a basic routine involving cleansing, moisturizing, and protection will suffice.

CLEANSING: Generally, during this period when sebum secretion increases, leading to increased skin imperfections, we can say that the most important stage of the skincare routine is cleansing. Contrary to common belief, cleansers with harsh and drying ingredients should be avoided, and instead, products with gentle ingredients that do not disrupt the moisture balance should be preferred. Cleansers containing excessive foaming surfactants are not suitable for this process.

MOISTURIZING: Unfortunately, this stage is crucial, especially for oily, combination, and acne-prone skins. A skin experiencing moisture loss tries to tolerate it by producing more sebum, leading to the increase of unwanted imperfections, shine, and clogged pores.

SUNSCREEN: Protecting the skin from the harmful rays of the sun is one of the most accurate investments for the future. Teenage skin is more sensitive to UV rays, and failure to properly protect against sunlight can lead to serious health problems in later years. Like in adults, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, and the skin should be completely cleansed before bedtime.

Just as every skin type is different, the skincare needs of every age are also different. Considering this, product ingredients should be carefully examined, and it should not be forgotten that consulting with a dermatologist is essential for the most suitable routine.
